Your skin may feel refreshed after a facial, but it can also be temporarily sensitive, especially after exfoliation, extractions, or stronger treatments. A simple routine helps protect your skin while it settles. For the first day or two, focus on gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and sun protection rather than trying new products. Your provider’s instructions should take priority, since the right timing depends on the treatment and how your skin responds.
Keep Your Routine Gentle
Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, non-scr exfoliating cleanser. Use your fingertips, not a cleansing brush or rough washcloth, and pat your face dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing or picking at areas that feel tender after extractions. If cleansing stings or makes your skin feel tight, rinse thoroughly and use a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer.
For at least the rest of the day, skip scrubs, masks, and products that leave your skin hot or tingly. Avoid adding new skincare products until your skin feels settled. If you wear makeup, consider waiting until the next day, particularly if your skin is red or sensitive, and use clean applicators when you do apply it.
Protect Skin From the Sun
After exfoliation, skin may be more reactive to sunlight. Limit direct sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher when you go outdoors. Reapply as directed on the label, especially after sweating or spending extended time outside. A hat and shade add useful protection.
If sunscreen usually irritates your skin, ask your facial provider which type is appropriate for you. Do not use a tanning bed or deliberately tan while your skin is recovering. Sun protection matters even on cloudy days, and it helps reduce the chance of irritation or uneven-looking skin after treatment.
Restart Active Products Gradually
Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and at-home peeling products for at least 24 to 48 hours after a routine facial. Wait longer if your provider recommends it or your skin remains red, tight, stinging, or flaky. Restart only when your skin feels back to normal.
Bring products back one at a time rather than restarting your full routine at once. Begin with your usual small amount and frequency; do not apply extra to make up for skipped days. If irritation returns, stop the active product, use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and contact your provider for guidance.
Know What Needs Attention
Mild redness or sensitivity can occur after some facials and should gradually improve. Avoid hot showers, saunas, intense exercise, or anything else that makes your face flush for the rest of the day if your skin feels warm or reactive. Follow any treatment-specific directions you received, especially after a peel or other intensive service.
Contact your provider if discomfort worsens, redness does not improve, or you notice significant swelling, blistering, or a rash. Seek urgent medical care for severe symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the lips or throat. Do not apply a strong active product to try to treat unexpected irritation.
For the first day or two after a facial, keep skincare simple: cleanse gently, moisturize, and protect your skin from the sun. Resume active products only when your skin feels calm, and follow treatment-specific instructions from your provider.
